Firstly, Cyprian of Carthage coined this statement and the Catholic Church has built on this since in the Catechism. It refers to the idea that Jesus is the head of the Church and the members of the Church community make up the body. The only way to access Jesus is through becoming part of this body.
Secondly, the reason why it is necessary to join the Church body is becauseonly through Jesus can salvation be achieved, and as the Church is Jesus’ body, the Church is necessary for salvation. The CCC states that people can enter the Church through faith and the sacrament of baptism.
Lastly, the CCC also teaches that the Church has a duty to evangelise people however they also teach that religious freedom is essential for human dignity and that people must be free to seek any faith they wish.
