Synonyms of phrasal verbs!
The government have put out a statement condemning the recent protests. - (to publish something or make information generally known)
=> issue: make it known formally or publicly
The union accepted the new pay deal and called off the strike. - (to decide that a planned event will not happen)
=> cancel: to decide that an organized event will not happen
The number of people not owning a TV set nowadays has gone down dramatically. - (to move down to a lower level or place)
=> decline: to gradually become less, worse, or lower
There was disturbance in Blackmoor Prison yesterday and three prisoners got away. - (to leave or escape from a person or place, often when it is difficult to do this)
=> escape: to get free from something such as a prison or cage, or from someone who will not allow you to leave
Could you see to lunch for our visitors? There will be four of them. - (to deal with something)
=> organize: to plan or arrange something
TIP: If you know a single-verb synonym of a phrasal verb, write it in your vocabulary notebook, and note whether or not the phrasal verb is more informal.
