Complications of Intravenous (IV) Infusions

  • Failure to Infuse Properly

    • Check for bent tubing, catheter position, or clots.

    • Ensure IV pole height and needle placement.

  • IV Infiltration

    • Signs: redness, swelling, ineffective medication.

    • Stop infusion, notify RN, assess for tissue damage.

    • Apply warm, wet compresses for pain relief.

  • Signs of Infection

    • Local: inflammation, pain; Systemic: fever.

    • Stop infusion, notify healthcare provider, treat per policy.

    • Save solution for microbial testing.

  • Allergic Reactions

    • Symptoms: rash, hives, itching, facial swelling.

    • Stop infusion, take vital signs, notify RN and provider immediately.

  • Circulatory Problems

    • Symptoms: pulmonary edema (dyspnea, cough, anxiety).

    • Notify RN and provider, monitor vital signs.

    • Symptoms: pulmonary embolus (chest pain, coughing blood).

    • Notify RN and provider, monitor vital signs.

  • Fluid Overload

    • Symptoms: dyspnea, weakness, edema, rapid pulse.

    • Monitor and notify healthcare provider for assessment.
