The Four Pillars of Simile (أركان التشبيه)
A simile in Arabic rhetoric consists of up to four fundamental elements:
- المشبه (The Subject / Compared Item): The primary topic or entity being described.
- المشبه به (The Object of Comparison): The secondary entity possessing the desired characteristic in a pronounced manner.
- أداة التشبيه (The Tool / Instrument of Comparison): The word linking the subject and object (e.g., particles like الكاف, كأن; nouns like مثل, نظير; or verbs like يشبه, يحاكي).
- وجه الشبه (The Point of Comparison / Shared Trait): The common feature or quality shared between the subject and the object of comparison.
Classifications of Simile (أنواع التشبيه)
Similes are classified based on the number of pillars present or the structure of the comparison:
- التشبيه المفصل (Detailed Simile): Includes all four pillars ().
- التشبيه المجمل (Concise Simile): Includes three pillars, omitting either the comparison tool or the point of comparison.
- التشبيه البليغ (Eloquent Simile): Includes only the two essential pillars: المشبه (Subject) and المشبه به (Object of Comparison). Common grammatical forms include:
- المبتدأ والخبر (Subject and Predicate)
- الحال وصاحبها (State and its Subject)
- المفعول المطلق المبين للنوع (Cognate Accusative / Absolute Object)
- إضافة المشبه به إلى المشبه (Noun Addition / Genitive Construction)
- التشبيه التمثيلي (Representative / Compound Simile): Compares a complete situation or scene to another complete situation or scene (حالة بحالة).
- التشبيه الضمني (Implicit Simile): A comparison that is not stated directly using comparison tools or standard syntactic forms; instead, the comparison is inferred from the overall meaning and context, where the second part acts as proof or justification for the first part.
Rhetorical Purpose and Secret of Beauty (سر جمال التشبيه)
- التشخيص (Personification): Occurs when comparing a non-human or inanimate entity (غير عاقل) to a human being (عاقل).
- التجسيم (Materialization / Embodiment): Occurs when comparing an abstract concept (معنوي) to a physical, tangible object (مادي).
- التوضيح (Clarification): Occurs when comparing abstract to abstract, physical to physical, or human to non-human/physical.
