Preamble

  • Foundation of Human Rights: Recognition of the inherent dignity and equal rights of all humans is crucial for freedom, justice, and peace.
  • Consequences of Disregard: Past injustices and atrocities demonstrate the necessity for the protection of human rights to prevent rebellion against tyranny.
  • Promotion of Relations: Promote friendly relations between nations; reaffirmation of faith in fundamental human rights is a collective commitment.
  • Common Standard: The UDHR acts as a global standard for all people and nations to achieve and uphold these rights.

Article 1

  • Equality and Dignity: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, endowed with reason and conscience; must act in a spirit of brotherhood.

Article 2

  • Entitlement to Rights: Everyone is entitled to rights without any distinctions (race, color, sex, language, religion, etc.).
  • No Distinctions Based on Status: Rights apply irrespective of political status (independent, colony, etc.).

Article 3

  • Rights to Life and Liberty: Everyone holds the right to life, liberty, and security.

Article 4

  • Prohibition of Slavery: No one shall be subjected to slavery or servitude; all forms of slavery and the slave trade are prohibited.

Article 5

  • Freedom from Torture: Assures everyone is protected from torture or cruel treatment.

Article 6

  • Legal Recognition: Everyone has the right to recognition as a person before the law.

Article 7

  • Rest and Leisure: Right to rest and leisure, including reasonable working hours and periodic holidays.

Article 25

  • Adequate Standard of Living: Right to health and well-being, including adequate food, clothing, housing, and care against unemployment and other adversities.

Article 26

  • Right to Education: Everyone has the right to education, ensuring free elementary education and availability of higher education.

Article 27

  • Cultural Participation: Right to participate freely in cultural life and to protect the moral and material interests of one's creative work.

Article 28

  • Social Order: Right to an international order where the declaration’s rights can be fully realized.

  • Community Duties: Everyone has responsibilities to the community ensuring personal development and subject to lawful limitations.

  • No Destruction of Rights: No state, group, or individual can engage in activities leading to the destruction of the rights in the declaration.
