Elements' Electron Configuration
there are different blocks, read horizonally. You can remember the blocks S, D, P, and F by thinking SPF (sunscreen) plus a friend who has name which begins with a D (example: Davis)

S block: It is the first two groups going down, plus helium (left to right); it has one orbital that can hold two electrons
P block: The last 6 groups going down, except for Helium which is S block; it has 3 orbitals for 6 electrons
D block: The middle ten groups between S-block and P-block, which is 1- what the families are'; it has five orbitals for ten electrons
F block: It is the seperate block farther down and the one strip between S and D; it has 7 orbitals for 14 electrons
It is important to note that when writing electron configuration, the noble gases (the final group on the far right), can be referred to, and the configuration listed from there to create a condensed verson
The usual order, with exponents referring to where it is in line, is:
1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p,4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6d, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p
