Elements' Electron Configuration

  • there are different blocks, read horizonally. You can remember the blocks S, D, P, and F by thinking SPF (sunscreen) plus a friend who has name which begins with a D (example: Davis)

    • S block: It is the first two groups going down, plus helium (left to right); it has one orbital that can hold two electrons

    • P block: The last 6 groups going down, except for Helium which is S block; it has 3 orbitals for 6 electrons

    • D block: The middle ten groups between S-block and P-block, which is 1- what the families are'; it has five orbitals for ten electrons

    • F block: It is the seperate block farther down and the one strip between S and D; it has 7 orbitals for 14 electrons

  • It is important to note that when writing electron configuration, the noble gases (the final group on the far right), can be referred to, and the configuration listed from there to create a condensed verson

  • The usual order, with exponents referring to where it is in line, is:

    • 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p,4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6d, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p
