Glia-Schwann cells(PNS only)

Macroglial :

  1. Astrocytes: provide structural support, maintains ion balance, surround blood vessels (BBB),

    1. Reactive astrocytes: go to damaged/injury to proliferate and repair

    2. Protoplasmic astrocytes: occur in gray matter (delicate w/ many branches)

    3. Fibrous astrocytes: Surround BBB, occur in white matter, cover exterior surface of CNS (more fibrous and robust)

  2. Oligodendrocytes: Predominate in white matter

    1. Extend multiple arms to myelinated multiple axons within the CNS

    2. PNS—>Schwann cells

    3. Myelin is the fatty layer that increases velocity of action potential

  3. Micro glial Cells

    1. Scavengers

    2. Neural regeneration/Repair
