Lost generation- WW1, felt lost because soldiers came back and thought they would be big heroes.
Silent generation- Taught to be quiet and respectful, didn’t serve in WW1 but couldn’t serve in WW2
Greatest generation- Known for surviving the depression and winning WW2

Immigration- Treated poorly by Americans. They kept people secluded.
Jim Crow- Unspoken laws to keep control of African Americans in the south post slavery.
Great migration- Migration of black people from the south up to the north.
Red summer- There were riots everywhere across America after African Americans moved to the big cities. Red=blood
Segregation- Separation between black and whites. “Separate but equal”
Shell Shock- Soldiers who were traumatized by wars and were anxious and shaky all the time. Soldiers went to talk therapy and were visibly more healthy after proving that therapy works.
Spanish Flu- 1918 influenza virus, doubled the deaths of WW1.
Gas warfare and it’s aftereffects- Using chemical weapons to kill a mass of people. National agreement to not use gas warfare anymore.
Radio- a popular form of entertainment. Linked the country in respects of news, music, ect.
Emergence of film- Little theaters popping up and movies being shown.
Prohibition- Not allowed to drink beer/ alcohol, laws to not give out alcohol
Jazz- a form of music. People began to go to hidden clubs and discovered African Americans playing jazz and found a love for it.
Flappers- Dancers who were exotic and their own subculture
Clara Bow- Was the biggest movie star at the time, but was highly sexualized and the first “It girl”
Babe Ruth- Baseball player, born an orphan but became a big success.
Subcultures- mini cultures that exist within cultures \
Josephine Baker- She was a world renowned performer, fruit outfits, WW2 spy, African American and activist.
Jelly Roll Morton- American blues jazz pianist
Harlem Renaissance- African American music, dance, art, fashion, theater and literature movement
Langston Hughes- Poet, social activist, novelist and big figure in Harlem Renaissance
F. Scott Fitzgerald- Novelist, wrote the Great Gatsby, famous novelist in that time period
Scopes Monkey Trial- Teacher in the south taught evolution, but was brought to the court because he isn’t allowed to teach it because it’s against the bible. They turned the trial into a play.
Capone- A bootlegger (selling liquor illegally) and famous gangster.
Lindbergh- First man to have a solo flight over the atlantic. Became a big hero figure and people wanted him to run for president.
Chaplin—The Kid- The biggest movie star, acted, directed and produced his own movies.
Baseball- Could hear on radio, means of entertainment, way for immigrants to normalize themselves in country (breaking the race barrier)
Boxing- Prized fighting, could come from nothing and become famous and rich
Harding- The president of the USA before Roosevelt, only lasted 3 years before he died. Favored big spending and tried to loosen up America
Franklin D and Eleanor Rooosevelt- He was a president, he had polio, he was very popular with America, he served 4 terms, his wife Elanor helped run the 4th term when he was really sick.
The only thing we have to fear- Quote from Roosevelt.
Fordism- the idea of doing things like Henry Ford…efficient.
The lead up to and aftereffects of the Wall Street Crash- The rich were getting richer while the poor were getting poorer. The main stock market crash.
The Dust Bowl- Everyone was getting sick from the mass amount of dust. Crops were getting killed
Woody Guthrie-A folk singer that wrote about the people in the dust bowl.
Amelia Earhart- First woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She disappeared on a flight
Bonnie and Clyde- Famous criminal duo, robbed people and banks. Finally got caught and were killed in an open fire.
Margaret Mitchell- Wrote “Gone with the wind”. Accused her of plagiarism
Talkies- Movies with sound
The New Deal- Roosevelt’s idea to get us out of the Great Depression. Government spends money on things to help America
Projects including Hoover Dam, Lake of Ozarks and Arts Funding-Projects made from the New Deal to get people jobs and make new housing and whatnot.
Things gained and lost due to these projects- Get people jobs, government took that land so some people lost their homes
War of the Worlds- radio play and panic- Radio show about mars invading earth, didn’t advertise that it was fake but people began to panic
Trouble in Europe, Appeasement and isolationism- Beginning of WW2, Germany invades Poland. Staying out of their business, we wanted to be isolated from this all.
Trouble in the Pacific–Rape of Nanking- Invaded China and raped all of the women. Burned city of Nanking, killed all the men, took all the children and sent them away.
The how and whys of Pearl Harbor- Didn’t fund them for their oil and gas for their ships.
A day that will live in Infamy- Roosevelt quote.. Always remember it in history
Axis and Allies- Allies- Gb, france, soviet union, US. Axis- Germany, Japan, Italy
Truman- President after Roosevelt, a guy who never had a chance to be president, decided that we would bomb Japan by clearing the Manhattan project.
Stalin- Leader of Russia who worked with us in war. Communist.
Hitler- Elected to be chancellor of Germany and slowly took more power. He ran the Nazi party.
Mussolini- Ruler in Italy, dictator, killed a lot of people, fascist.
Churchill- Prime minister of England, refused to give up, elected as the prime minister
Hirohito- Ruler of Japan, they called him Emperor
Japanese Internment- Japanese citizens of US that we put in camps because we were suspicious of them
Battle of Bataan, Death March- Early US loss in the war, long march where a lot of people died (took US soldiers and made them walk to death)
D-Day- US invasion in beaches of France
Music of the time (Its message, themes and characteristics)- A lot of sad songs, “thinking of you, I hope I see you again, ect..”
Rosie the Riveter- A figure for women to take over the jobs of the men while they were away at war.
Zoot Suit Riots- White people who were angry with the Hispanic population. Zoot suits were what the Mexicans wore.
Hollywood Propaganda- Heroes were American soldiers, all villains are Germans and Japanese, news reels brought into movie theaters.
Return of Beer and its perception problem- Germans drank beer and it was seen as bad
Gaslight- Expressed the feeling of being manipulated and feeling you are going crazy. Everyone said to stay calm but we knew the Germans were going to do something bad.
Bombing of Dresden- Pre bombings (Nagasaki), over a thousand heavy bombers of the Royal Air Force and the U.S. 8th Air Force struck the city of Dresden in eastern Germany.
Manhattan Project- name for US developing atomic weapons
Nagasaki/ Hiroshima- cities in Japan that US dropped bombs on
Fat Man/Little Boy- Names of the bombs used
Demilitarization- Getting home from war, getting tanks and weapons back. Switching from being a country at war and needing the military back to normal life.
Impact on Women and minorities (African Americans, Japanese return home, Women back home- Women are expected to go home, minorities are expected to go back to jobs with less pay, Japanese who are in camps are sent back home.
G.I. Bill- If you had served in the military, their education was paid for.
Physical and Psychotically effects of war- They have increased substance abuse, increased domestic violence, PTSD
Child Labor laws- kids were working during war and not work.
