Dairy – relates to animal milk products created from animal milk, including cheese and yoghurt.

·         Some Australians particularly young, reduce their intake of dairy because they believe it contributes to weight gain – insufficient evidence support this claim

·         Approximately 5 % of the population experience dairy intolerance, which is a reduces ability to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in dairy foods

Osteoporosis

·         Calcium is a mineral that strengthens bones and prevents osteoporosis

·         Characterised by weak, porous bones that are susceptible to fracture

·         Underconsumption of dairy can lead to CVD, colorectal cancer, type 2 diabetes and dental caries

 

 

OTHER HEALTH STATUS IMPLICATIONS OF LOW DAIRY INTAKE

Cardiovascular disease – can lead to heart disease, hypertension and stroke.

Colorectal cancer – people who regularly consume more than one serve of dairy daily have a reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

Dental caries – calcium helps to harden tooth enamel. Underconsumption leads to weaker teeth.
