Drugs to Avoid in Pregnancy

• Common Contraindicated Drugs:

  • NSAIDs:

    • Aspirin: Can cause bleeding issues and affect fetal development.

    • Ibuprofen: May lead to complications, especially in the third trimester, such as premature closure of the ductus arteriosus in the fetus.

  • Certain Antibiotics:

    • Ciprofloxacin: Associated with risk of tendon damage and potential effects on fetal bone development.

    • Doxycycline: Can affect bone and teeth development, causing discoloration in the fetus.

  • Benzodiazepines:

    • Clonazepam: Risk of neonatal withdrawal syndrome and potential harmful effects on fetal brain development.

  • Other Drugs:

    • Retin-A: Used for acne, has teratogenic effects and can cause serious birth defects.

    • Warfarin: An anticoagulant that can lead to fetal bleeding and malformations.
