Layers of the Earth
- Overview: The Earth is composed of four main layers that play crucial roles in the planet's structure and dynamics.
Inner Core
- Composition: Made primarily of iron and nickel.
- Physical State: Solid due to extreme pressure and temperature (metals are squeezed tightly together).
- Thickness: Approximately 1200 km.
Outer Core
- Composition: Similar to the inner core but in a molten state, also comprised of iron and nickel.
- Physical State: Liquid (very hot metals).
- Thickness: About 2300 km.
Mantle
- Location: Layer situated below the Earth's crust.
- Composition: Composed mainly of silicates of magnesium and iron.
- Thickness: Roughly 2900 km.
- Subdivisions: Divided into three sections:
- Upper Mantle: Rigid.
- Middle Mantle (Asthenosphere): Plastic; contains convection currents that facilitate plate movement.
- Lower Mantle: Semi-solid.
The Crust
Overview: The outermost layer, often likened to the skin of an apple. It's relatively thin compared to the other layers.
Thickness: Ranges from 8 to 30 km.
Composition: Primarily made of silicon and oxygen, and is solid.
Structure: Fractured into tectonic plates, which move on the mantle.
Types of Crust:
- Oceanic Crust: Mainly composed of basalt, denser than continental crust.
- Continental Crust: Primarily made of granite, less dense than oceanic crust.
