Terminology

  • Flexion: Reducing the angle of a joint (e.g., bending the elbow).
    • Involves contraction of the bicep muscle.
  • Extension: Increasing the angle of a joint (e.g., straightening the elbow).
    • Involves contraction of the tricep muscle and elongation of the bicep muscle.

What is Proprioception?

  • Proprioception is the sense that allows your brain to understand the position of your body parts in space.
  • It's an internal sense, as opposed to the five external senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing).
  • Scientists debate whether it's a distinct sense, but it provides critical information about body awareness.

How Proprioception Works

  • Proprioception relies on various receptors in the body:
    • Muscle spindles: Located within muscles, these receptors measure muscle length and the speed of muscle movement
      • One type measures the length and how fast your muscles move
      • The other type just measures the length of the muscle
      • As we extend a joint, the muscle fibers get longer and the distance between the coils increases, and this information is relayed to the brain.
    • Tendon receptors: Located in tendons (which connect muscles to bones), these receptors detect the force being exerted on muscles.
      • Provide a sense of how heavy something is and how much force is needed to grip or move it.
    • Joint receptors: Located in joints, these receptors detect the angle of each joint.
