Chapter 1: English And Spanish Notes

The Dual Language Program is a model for teaching that divides instruction equally between English and Spanish, implementing a 50/50 schedule. In terms of instructional structure, students learn in each language for half of the day. This is achieved by having one teacher deliver instruction in English for the first half of the day, while a second teacher, who is a native speaker, teaches in Spanish for the second half of the day.

The student demographics include recent immigrants as well as second and third generation Mexican-Americans. There are concerns about language loss among younger generations, which can affect communication with older family members. The primary goals of this program are to enhance bilingual proficiency and maintain cultural connections through language.
