ecclesiastical = of, or relating to the church, especially as a formal and established institution (context: what little economic thought existed in medieval times was totally colored by ecclesiasticism, which includes Islamic economic thought.  Starting with the mercantilists, economic thinkers looked elsewhere - towards primitive science - for guidance and inspiration.)   

symbiotic = the intimate living together of two dissimilar organisms in a mutually beneficial relationship (context:    the mercantilists, although being private citizens, had close ties to the monarchs.)     

ethos = distinguishing character, tone, or guiding beliefs 

hagiology = literature dealing with the lives and legends of saints (context:   according to the mercantilists, the merchants were the saints; according to the physiocrats, the agricultural entrepreneurs were the saints)
