Indices 1

Index laws

  • Indices include square roots, cube roots and powers
  • You can use the index laws to simplify powers and roots
    • A(m) x A(n) = A(m+n)
    • A(m)/A(n)=A(m-n)
    • (Am)n=A(mn)

Cube root

  • The cube root of a positive number is positive
    • 4(3)=64
  • The cube root is a negative number is negative
    • (-4)3=-64

Powers of 0 and 1

  • Anything raised to the power 0 is equal to 1
    • 6(0)=1
  • Anything raised to the power 1 is equal to itself
    • 6(1)=6

Indices checklist

  • The base number have to be the same
  • If there’s no index, the number has the power 1
  • Be careful with negatives
