Sciatic Nerve and Related Nerves

Sciatic Nerve

  • The largest nerve of the sacral plexus, and also the largest nerve in the body, is the sciatic nerve.
  • The sciatic nerve travels in the posterior thigh.
  • It splits into two branches:
    • Tibial nerve
    • Common fibular nerve

Tibial Nerve

  • Provides motor innervation to the posterior muscles of the thigh, posterior leg, and foot.
  • Gives off a small superficial sensory branch, the sural nerve.

Nerves

  • Iliohypogastric nerve
  • Ilioinguinal nerve
  • Genitofemoral nerve

  • Femoral nerve
  • Superior gluteal nerve
  • Inferior gluteal nerve

  • Sciatic nerve
  • Posterior femoral cutaneous nerve
  • Common fibular nerve
  • Tibial nerve
