Drawing Lewis Dot Structures

  • Step 1: Count Valence Electrons

    • Determine the total number of valence electrons for all atoms in the molecule.

  • Step 2: Write the Atomic Symbols

    • Write the atomic symbols for all atoms, placing the least electronegative atom in the center.

  • Step 3: Connect Atoms with Single Bonds

    • Connect atoms with single bonds by sharing a pair of electrons between each pair of bonded atoms.

  • Step 4: Distribute Remaining Electrons

    • Distribute the remaining electrons around the atoms to satisfy the octet rule for each atom, except hydrogen (which follows the duet rule).

  • Step 5: Check Formal Charges

    • Calculate formal charges for each atom to ensure the most stable structure.

  • Step 6: Double and Triple Bonds

    • If necessary, convert a pair of electrons in a single bond to a double bond or triple bond to achieve a more stable structure.

  • Step 7: Check Stability

    • Ensure that all atoms have a complete octet (except hydrogen) and that the formal charges are minimized for the most stable Lewis structure.
