Enemy Aliens:

• During both World War I and World War II, the Australian government implemented measures to monitor and control the activities of foreign nationals living in Australia, particularly those from countries considered to be enemies.
• In World War I, the government established internment camps for enemy aliens, mainly Germans and Austrians, who were considered a potential threat to national security. These camps were often harsh, and many internees faced discrimination and mistreatment.
• In World War II, the government established a more comprehensive system of internment, which targeted not only German and Austrian nationals but also Italians and Japanese. Over 20,000 people were interned during the war, including both immigrants and Australian-born citizens of enemy nationality.
