Investigating distribution

Sampling

  • In which scientists measure a subset (small, random group) of organisms in an environment instead of every organisms to consume time.

Method

1) Place tape measures along the length and width of a field so it acts as a grid

2) Use a random number generator to generate 10 coordinates

3) Place quadrats at the coordinates generated and count the number of X in each

4) Calculate the mean number of X per m2

5) Estimate the total number of X using the mean and the total area of the field.
