Stage N1 Sleep Overview

Stage N1 (Non-REM1) Sleep

  • First stage of non-REM sleep.
  • Characterized by drowsy sleep and absence of rapid eye movements (REM).
  • Presence of myoclonic jerks (sudden muscle movements).
  • Often involves a sensation of falling, contributing to the term "falling asleep."
  • EEG patterns show theta waves, which are slower in frequency and greater in amplitude than alpha waves.
  • The transition from relaxation to Stage N1 sleep is gradual.
