    • "Positive checks" (famines, disease outbreaks, violence) and "preventive checks" (birth control) that stabilise population growth.

  • Cornucopian theory: This theory is less pessimistic and asserts that human ingenuity can resolve any environmental or social issues that develop.

    • It dismisses the idea of humans wiping themselves out.

    • It argues that if more food is needed, agricultural scientists will find ways to grow it, as they have done for centuries.

    • This perspective believes that human ingenuity has been sufficient in the past and will continue to be so.

  • Demographic transition theory: This theory suggests that future population growth will develop along a predictable four-stage model as societies evolve and become industrialised:

    • Stage 1: High birth, death, and Infant Mortality Rates (IMR), with short life expectancy (e.g., 1800s in the US).

    • Stage 2: Birth rate remains higher while IMR and death rates drop, and life expectancy increases (e.g., current Afghanistan).

    • Stage 3: When society is thoroughly industrialised, birth and death rates decline, and life expectancy continues to increase (e.g., current Mexico).

    • Stage 4: Post-industrial era with low birth and death rates, healthier and longer-living people, leading to population stability or even decline (e.g., current Sweden).

5. Population Growth and Control

  • Measures to control population explosion include:

    • Focus on family planning measures.

    • Provision of free education, with a focus on literacy.

    • Implementation of strict guidelines on the minimum age criteria of marriage.

    • Female empowerment.

    • Improvement in the quality of life.
