Measurement Terminology in Lab Analysis
Reporting of measurement results often includes specific terminologies:
BDL: Below Detection Limit; indicates a measurement value is below the detectable range of the instrument.
ND: Not Detectable; implies that a substance was not detected at all during the measurement process.
Reporting limits can vary (e.g., below reporting limit, below minimum reporting limit).
If a measurement is below the reporting limit but above the Minimum Detection Limit (MDL), it can still be reported with a qualifier, usually denoted as a
Jqualifier.
Calibration and Reporting Limits
Calibration curves help to determine the Minimum Reporting Limit (MRL).
MRL is defined as the concentration of a substance at which a reliable detection can occur.
For turbidity testing, the calibration curve establishes what values can be reliably reported.
Example of calibration standards for turbidity includes both check and calibrating standards.
Reporting standards must always fall within established parameters set during calibration analysis.
