Intrapersonal Communication Notes

Intrapersonal Communication

  • Helps with social adjustment (Dance & Larson, 1972).
  • Builds and maintains self-concept based on how others communicate with us.
  • Used to let off steam, process emotions, think through issues, or rehearse future actions.
  • Competent intrapersonal communication facilitates social interaction and enhances well-being.
  • Breakdown in intrapersonal communication is linked to mental illness (Dance & Larson, 1972).
  • Can be unplanned (e.g., laughing at a funny thought) or intentional (e.g., self-reflection).
  • Deliberate self-reflection can improve communication competence.
  • Received the least amount of formal study compared to other forms of communication.
  • Differs from other levels of communication because it is not created with the intention that another person will perceive it.
