Benign Disorders

Vulvar Dystrophy

  • Found in older women.
  • Causes dry, thickened skin on the vulva, or slightly raised, whitish papules, fissures, or macules.
  • May be asymptomatic or cause itching.
  • May be associated with vulvar cancer, necessitating biopsy and follow-up visits.
  • Treatment includes:
    • Topical corticosteroids.
    • Petrolatum jelly to control itching until resolution.
    • Education includes personal hygiene and self-monitoring for signs and symptoms (s/s) of complications.
    • Lanolin or hydrogenated vegetable oil for ongoing dryness.

Vulvar Cancer

  • Often presents with persistent itching, pain, or lesions on the vulva.
  • May be associated with HPV or chronic inflammation.
  • Treated with local excision or vulvectomy, depending on the extent.
