Anatomy of the Eye

  • The eye is composed of various structures that work together to help with vision.

Pupils and Iris

  • Pupil: The circular opening that allows light to enter the eye.
    • When dilated, the pupil has a larger circumference, permitting more light to enter.
  • Iris: The colored part of the eye.
    • Muscles around the iris constrict or dilate the pupil in response to light.

Lens

  • The lens is a convex structure, meaning it curves outward in the center.
    • Function: Responsible for light refraction, allowing the eye to focus on images.
  • Ciliary Zonules (Suspensory Ligaments): Structures attached to the lens that help regulate its shape.
  • Ciliary Body: The muscle connected to the ciliary zonules that adjusts the thickness of the lens.
    • Lens function can decrease over time due to loss of muscle tone in the ciliary body.

Posterior Segment

  • The posterior segment of the eye contains the vitreous humor, which is a jelly-like substance that supports the globe of the eye.
  • Light travels through the vitreous humor and creates an image on the retina.

Retina

  • The retina is where the image is formed and contains photoreceptors (rods and cones).
    • Photoreceptors: Convert light into neural signals.
  • Macula Lutea: An oval-shaped area on the retina that contains a high density of photoreceptors.
  • Fovea Centralis: The center of the macula, responsible for sharp central vision.
  • Blind Spot: Area lacking rods and cones where no image is formed due to the absence of photoreceptors.

Structure and Function of Retinal Tissue

  • Retina is yellow when viewed, indicating it's composed of nerve tissue, not photoreceptors, and has a blood supply.
  • Optic Nerve: The pathway carrying visual information from the retina to the brain.
  • Nerve fibers from the retina converge to form the optic nerve, which crosses at the optic chiasm.

Visual Pathway to Brain

  • Visual information travels from the optic nerve to the occipital lobe, located at the back of the head, where it is processed into images.
  • The optic nerve contains the central artery and vein of the retina, providing blood supply necessary for the retina's function.
