Connective Tissues Overview
Connective tissues primarily consist of matrix and fibers rather than cells.
Classification is often based on the type and concentration of fibers present.
Categories of Connective Tissues
Ordinary Connective Tissues (Fibrous Connective Tissues)
Includes loose connective tissue and adipose (fat) tissue.
Supporting Connective Tissues
Composed of cartilage and bone.
Special Connective Tissues
Includes blood and blood-forming tissues.
Types of Connective Tissues
Loose Connective Tissue
Forms superficial and deep fascia.
Superficial Fascia: Binds skin to muscles.
Deep Fascia: Binds groups of muscles together.
Surrounds blood vessels, holding tissues together.
Contains two types of fibers:
Elastic Fibers: Thin, dark fibers.
Collagen Fibers: Appears pink in the background.
Fibroblasts: Cells that produce collagen and elastic fibers.
Loosely packed fibers allow for flexibility.
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
Composed of densely packed, parallel collagen fibers.
Major function is to provide tensile strength:
Found in tendons (connect muscles to bones) and ligaments (bind bone to bone).
Collagen fibers are stronger than steel if of the same diameter.
Structural similarities between ligaments and tendons, but differing functions:
Tendons: Transmit muscle contraction force to bones.
Ligaments: Stabilize joints.
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
Contains densely packed collagen fibers arranged irregularly.
Forms the dermis layer of the skin.
The interface of the dermis and epidermis resembles interlocking fingers.
Provides structural support and strength to skin while allowing for flexibility.
Elastic Connective Tissue
Found in large arteries, such as the aorta.
Allows for vessel expansion and recoil due to extensibility and elasticity.
Contains a higher proportion of elastic fibers compared to other fibers.
Reticular Connective Tissue
Composed of reticular fibers which are modified collagen fibers.
Primarily found in lymphatic organs, such as lymph nodes and spleen.
Provides structural support for these organs.
Adipose Connective Tissue
Commonly referred to as fat tissue.
Composed of Adipocytes (fat cells) that store triglycerides.
Adipocytes push organelles toward the cell's periphery, giving a distinctive appearance under a microscope.
Often confused with other tissue types due to cellular appearance:
Unlike alveoli in the lung, adipose is made of single cells, not layers.
