Hip Bone (Os Coxa)

  • Composed of three distinct bones that fuse during development:
    • Ilium: Superior part of the hip bone.
    • Ischium: Posterior inferior aspect.
    • Pubis: Anterior inferior aspect.
  • As development progresses, the three bones form a single structure called the os coxae.

Acetabulum

  • The three bones meet at a cavity called the acetabulum, located on the lateral side of the hip bone.
  • The head of the femur articulates with the acetabulum to form the hip joint.

Iliac Crest

  • The upper edge of the ilium is called the iliac crest.
  • It is a significant landmark for muscle attachment.

Major Features of Os Coxa

  • Five anatomical spines associated with the os coxae:
    • Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (ASIS): Anterior and superior part of the ilium.
    • Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine (AIIS): Located inferior to ASIS, still on the ilium.
    • Posterior Superior Iliac Spine (PSIS): Posterior part of the ilium.
    • Posterior Inferior Iliac Spine (PIIS): Just inferior to PSIS, also on the ilium.
    • Ischial Spine: Located on the ischium, serves as a landmark.
  • Ischial Tuberosity: The bony prominence you sit on; part of the ischium.

Greater Sciatic Notch

  • A significant notch present on the ilium, allowing passage for the sciatic nerve.

Femur (Thigh Bone)

  • The longest bone in the human body.

Structure of the Femur

  • Proximal End: Includes the head, neck, and greater/lesser trochanters.
    • Head of the Femur: Articulates with the acetabulum; has an impression known as fovea capitis.
    • Neck of the Femur: Connects the head to the shaft of the femur.
    • Greater Trochanter: A large projection located laterally at the proximal end.
    • Lesser Trochanter: A smaller projection located medially at the proximal end.

Distal End Features

  • Condyles: The femur features two condyles at its distal end:
    • Lateral Condyle: Positioned laterally.
    • Medial Condyle: Positioned medially.
  • Epicondyles: Adjacent to the condyles:
    • Lateral Epicondyle: Located on the lateral aspect.
    • Medial Epicondyle: Located on the medial aspect.
  • Intercondylar Fossa: A depression found between the condyles on the posterior aspect.

Intertrochanteric Features

  • Intertrochanteric Line: A ridge on the anterior side between the greater and lesser trochanters.
  • Intertrochanteric Crest: A more prominent ridge found on the posterior side.
  • Linea Aspera: A line running along the posterior length of the femur, splitting into two lines (lateral and medial supracondylar lines) towards the distal end.

Lower Leg Bones (Crus)

  • Consists of two main bones:
    • Tibia (Shin Bone): The medial and larger bone.
    • Fibula: The lateral and smaller bone.

Tibia Features

  • Tibial Tuberosity: A prominent bump on the anterior aspect of the tibia.
  • Anterior Border: Known colloquially as the shin.
  • Soleal Line: An oblique line on the posterior aspect of the tibia.
  • Intercondylar Tubercles: Two projections on the proximal end; can merge into the Intercondylar Eminence.

Fibula Features

  • Head of the Fibula: The proximal end of the fibula, located laterally.

Distal Features of Tibia and Fibula

  • Medial Malleolus: The distal end of the tibia.
  • Lateral Malleolus: The distal end of the fibula.

Patella (Kneecap)

  • Located at the anterior aspect of the knee.
  • Comprised of:
    • Base: Proximal portion.
    • Apex: Distal portion.

Tarsal Bones (Ankle)

  • Composed of seven distinct bones:
    • Talus: Positioned posteriorly and medially beneath the tibia.
    • Calcaneus: The heel bone, the most posterior and lateral tarsal bone.
    • Navicular: Situated directly anterior to the talus.
    • Cuneiforms: Three bones positioned anterior to the navicular:
    • Medial Cuneiform
    • Intermediate Cuneiform
    • Lateral Cuneiform
    • Cuboid: Located lateral to the cuneiforms and anterior to the calcaneus.

Metatarsals and Phalanges of the Foot

  • There are five metatarsals in the foot labeled 1 to 5:
    • Metatarsal One: Articulates with the medial cuneiform.
    • Metatarsal Two: Articulates with the intermediate cuneiform.
    • Metatarsal Three: Articulates with the lateral cuneiform.
    • Metatarsals Four and Five: Articulate with the cuboid.
  • Phalanges: The toe bones:
    • Hallux (Big Toe): Composed of two phalanges (proximal and distal).
    • Toes Two to Five: Each composed of three phalanges (proximal, middle, and distal).
