The Need for Another Model

• Spectroscopy is the process of studying electromagnetic radiation by breaking it up into its wavelengths.

• This method allows identification of gaps (in an absorption spectrum) or bright spots (in an emission spectrum).

• Gaps and bright spots correspond to specific energy values.

• These energy values are best described by treating the radiation as consisting of discrete energy packets, called photons.
