Split brain research 5
Split Brain Research:
Isolates the functions of the two hemispheres.
Left visual field – right cortex ---- Right visual field – left cortex.
Projected words to the left to the right visual fields, could say the word presented to the right visual field but not those shown to the left visual field, however the patient could draw or pick up a named object.
Gazzaniga-projected faces to both visual fields. Those projected to the left visual field were recognised by those projected to the right visual were not.
Therefore, face recognition is in the right hemisphere.
Human brain has two hemispheres – left and right.
Left hemisphere:
Language Broca’s & Wemicks area (right side of the body).
Right hemisphere:
Navigation ECT (left side of the body).
Each hemisphere specialises in different things:
LEFT – speech, logic, maths, facts, words.
RIGHT – visual motor tasks, imagination, intuition, arts, faces.
Evaluation:
Split brain patients are rare.
Problems with patients having other neurological problems.
Not all disconnections were the same extent.
Difficulty with being able to generalise.
