π 2. Feudalism
Feudalism was a system based on land, loyalty and service.
The system:
King β Lords β Knights β Peasants
π King: Owned the land and gave land to lords.
π° Lords: Controlled land and provided soldiers.
π‘ Knights: Fought for lords and protected the land.
πΎ Peasants: Farmed the land and provided food.
π¨βπΎ Serfs: Peasants who were tied to the land.

πΎ 3. Daily Life & The Manor
A manor was a lord's estate.
It could include:

πΎ Farmland
π Peasant houses

β Blacksmith
π³ Woods
πΎ Fields

Peasants
Most peasants:
Worked on farms
Grew crops
Looked after animals
Paid rent or taxes
Worked for their lord
Three-field system
Land was divided into:
Winter crops
Summer crops
Fallow land
Fallow = land left unused so the soil could recover.

The Church was very powerful in medieval society.
It:

Tithe
A tithe was a payment of about 10% to the Church.

The Church influenced almost every part of medieval life.
β 5. Crime & Punishment
Medieval punishments could be very harsh.

Physical punishments
Execution
Punishments could depend on:
The crime
Social status
Whether it was a repeat offence
Trial by ordeal
A method based on the belief that God would reveal whether someone was guilty or innocent.

Knights were trained medieval warriors who served a lord.
They trained in:

π Jousting
π‘ Shield use
Chivalry
A code of behaviour that knights were expected to follow.
π° 7. Castles
Castles were mainly built for defence and protection.
Important features:
π Moat β water around the castle
π Drawbridge β bridge that could be raised
π§± Battlements β defensive wall sections
πΌ Towers β helped soldiers see enemies
πͺ Portcullis β heavy defensive gate
π° Keep β strong central building

βͺ 8. Cathedrals
Cathedrals were large and important Christian churches.
They were used for:
Worship
Religious ceremonies
Community gatherings
Showing the power of the Church
Gothic features:

πͺ Stained-glass windows
