Comprehensive Study Guide for ESS Final Mock Exam and KA7
Exam Schedule and Important Dates
Knowledge Assessment 7 (KA7): Scheduled for June 1st and June 2nd. This assessment focuses specifically on Topics 3, 4, and 5.
ESS Final Exam: Scheduled for June 18th. This comprehensive exam covers the full range of Topics 1 through 5.
Content Classification and Color Key
The study guide utilizes a specific color-coding system to denote the nature of the information and its relevance to specific exams:
Purple: Indicates Case Studies. These are essential for applying theoretical knowledge to specific, real-world examples as required by the IB.
Blue: Indicates HL (Higher Level) content. This material is specific to students taking the course at the Higher Level.
Green: Indicates material that is NOT on the KA7 assessment but WILL be featured on the Final Exam.
Scope of Study and Authority
The Final Authority: Students are reminded that the IB guide is the ultimate authority on content covered in any International Baccalaureate exam.
Eligible Material: Anything discussed during class sessions, appearing in presentation slides, included in practice documents, or recorded in video notes is considered fair game for the mock exam.
Topic 1: Foundations
1.1 Perspectives: Exploration of Environmental Value Systems (EVS) and the different lenses through which individuals and groups view environmental issues.
1.2 Systems: Understanding systems and models, including the concepts of inputs, outputs, flows (transfers and transformations), and storages within environmental contexts.
1.3 Sustainability: Examining the definitions of sustainability, natural capital, natural income, and the methods used to measure environmental impact (e.g., Environmental Impact Assessments and Footprints).
Topic 2: Ecology
2.1 Individuals, Populations, Communities, and Ecosystems: The hierarchy of biological organization and the interactions between biotic and abiotic factors.
2.2 Energy and Biomass in Ecosystems: The flow of energy through trophic levels and the production of biomass.
2.3 Biogeochemical Cycles: The movement of matter through various cycles, such as the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous cycles.
2.4 Climate & Biomes: The relationship between climate patterns (temperature and precipitation) and the distribution of the world's major biomes.
2.5 Zonation, Succession & Changes in Biomes: The study of how ecosystems change over space (zonation) and over time (succession), including the role of disturbances.
Topic 3: Biodiversity & Conservation
3.1 Biodiversity & Conservation: Introduction to biodiversity, including genetic, species, and habitat diversity.
3.2 Human Impact on Biodiversity: Analyzing how human activities lead to habitat loss, overexploitation, and species extinction or endangerment.
3.3 Conservation & Regeneration: Strategies for protecting biodiversity, including in-situ and ex-situ conservation and the restoration of ecosystems.
Topic 4: Water
4.1 Water Systems: The hydrological cycle and the various storages and flows of water on Earth.
4.2 Water Access, Use, and Security: Issues surrounding the availability of fresh water, consumption patterns, and the factors contributing to water scarcity.
4.3 Aquatic Food Production Systems: The harvesting of organisms from aquatic environments, including fisheries and aquaculture, and their environmental impacts.
4.4 Water Pollution: Types of water pollutants (e.g., organic, inorganic, thermal, biological) and their effects on ecosystems and human health.
Topic 8: Human Populations & Urban Systems
8.1 Human Populations: Demographic factors affecting human population growth, including fertility rates, mortality rates, and population pyramids.

Primary Classroom Resources:
Daily instructional slides.
Personalized student work, including all classwork and homework assignments.
Official Textbook: Pearson Environmental Systems and Societies for the IB Diploma Programme.
Technical References: IB Command Terms, which are located within the classroom resources. These terms are vital for understanding exactly what a question is asking (e.g., "evaluate" vs. "describe").
External Digital Resources:
Mr. Green Science: Specifically tailored for the New ESS Syllabus.
Mr. Kremer Science: Updated for the New ESS syllabus.
Bozeman Science: Noted as being high-quality, though students should be aware that these materials were designed for AP Environmental Science rather than the IB ESS curriculum specifically.
