Free Standing Sculpture
Definition: A sculpture that can be viewed from all sides.
Carved Panel
Definition: A sculptural form that is created with very little depth, allowing figures to project from the background.
High Relief Sculpture
Definition: A type of carved panel where the figures project with a great deal of depth from the background.
Bust
Definition: A statue of a person that depicts only the head and shoulders.
Subtractive Sculpture
Definition: A sculpting method that involves removing material to produce a sculptural form.
Additive Sculpture
Definition: A sculpting process in which the artist builds a form by adding material.
Cast Sculpture
Definition: A sculpture made by pouring a liquid material into a mold.
Armature
Definition: The framework or skeleton that supports a sculpture.
Assemblage
Definition: Artwork created from three-dimensional materials, including found objects.
Kinetic Art
Definition: Art that is usually three-dimensional and includes moving parts.
Architectural Elements
Post and Beam
Definition: A horizontal beam supported at each end by vertical posts or walls.
Arch
Definition: A semicircular form supported by colonnades, used to create great spans.
Barrel Vault
Definition: The extension in depth of a single arch by lining up one arch behind another.
Dome
Definition: A hemisphere defined as a continuous arch rotated 360 degrees on its axis.
Buttress
Definition: Stone supports extending inward from a series of columns, helping to secure the outer walls of a structure.
