Substance and Addictive Disorders

  • Many normal substances such as coffee or asprin can harm or disrupt moods if misused

  • Not only numerous substances are available in our society, new ones are introduced everyday

  • Some substances lead to long-term problems, ones who abuse substances can eventually obtain a substance use disorder

  • When people develop a tolerance, they need increasing dosage in order to feel the same effects

    Ones can also be effected by withdrawls of the substance


Tolerance: Brain and body’s need for larger dosage of drugs

Withdrawls: Unpleasant sometimes dangerous reaction that can occur for people who stop using the substances they took regularly to stop or reduce dosage

Substance use disorder: Pattern of longtime maladaptive behaviors and reactions brought about by repeated use of a substance

Substance Use Disorder Checklist

  • 1) Individual displays a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to significant impairment or distress

    2) Presencee of at least 2 of the following substance produced symptoms within a year period

  • Substance is taken in large amounts

  • Unsuccessful efforts to reduce or control substance

  • Much time spent trying to obtain substance

  • Failiure to fufill major role obligations

  • Continued use despite persistent interpersonal problems
