Mortality, Self-Esteem, and Social Identity
Central idea: death anxiety is managed by self-esteem; affiliating with others and being in groups boosts self-esteem and reduces mortality-related anxiety. This helps people feel good, and sometimes even immortal, via social belonging.
Greenberg, Solomon, & Pyszczynski (1990) findings:
When reminded of death (mortality salience), attraction to others who consensually validate beliefs increases.
Attraction to those who threaten beliefs decreases.
Mortality salience can enhance ingroup affiliation and preference for larger ideological groups.

Regardless of whether others opposed or supported their worldview, participants under mortality salience preferred sitting in a group chair (i.e., sought company) over a single chair, suggesting a preference for belonging under threat.
Conclusion: when belonging needs and worldview validation are in conflict, the need to belong can override the need to validate one’s worldview.
The need to belong and social identity
Two broad types of self: personal identity (defined by personal characteristics/relationships) and social identity (defined by group memberships).
