Lesson 7: Lipids

Lipids
: most common long term energy storage

  • insulator, protects internal organs, hormones, make up the cell membrane

  • hydrophobic, made of C,H, O (no ratio)

  • monomer: glycerol (not a lipid) and fatty acids

  • 4 categories: fats, phospholipids, steroids, waxes

Saturated Fats
: full of H, only has single bonds

  • contains carboxyl group on one side

Unsaturated Fats
: not full of H, has at least one double bond

  • contains carboxyl group on one side

  • Monounsaturated fat
    : one double bond

  • Polyunsaturated fat
: two or more double bonds

Glycerol
: an alcohol

Fats

  • most common storage form is triglycerides

Phospholipids

  • hydrophilic head composed of phosphate group + glycerol

  • hydrophobic tails composed of two fatty acids

Steroids
: made of four fused hydrocarbon rings (e.g. cholesterol)

Waxes
: made of C atoms

  • solid at room temperature
