Introduction
- Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs is a 5-tier model of human needs.
- Lower-level needs must be met before higher levels can be achieved.
- The higher the level, the more difficult it may be to meet these needs.
- Levels may not be fixed as everyone’s needs are different.
- Our behavior is motivated by multiple needs at the same time.
Physiological Needs
- Necessary for life.
- If physiological needs are not met, death will occur.
- Most important of all needs.
Safety and Security
- People want to feel secure in their environment.
- Free from anxiety and fear.
- People want to experience order, predictability, and control in their lives.
Love and Belonging
- Human emotional need for interpersonal relationships
- Social acceptance, friendship, and to be loved.
- Want to be part of a group.
Self-Esteem
- Feeling important and valued.
- Two categories:
- Esteem for oneself
- Reputation or respect from others
Self-Actualization
- Confident
- Willing to help others
- Difficult to achieve and maintain consistency.
