Respiratory system objectives
1. list the functions of the respiratory system.
2. list and define the 4 parts of respiration – pulmonary ventilation, external and internal
respiration, and transport of gases.
3. list the organs/structures involved in the respiratory system and describe the cell types found in
each part and their (the structure) functions.
4. list the gases that make up the atmosphere.
5. explain why the percentages of the gases in the atmosphere doesn’t change but partial pressure
does (with respect to changes in altitude).
6. relate Boyle’s Law, Dalton’s Law, Henry’s Law, and Fick’s law of diffusion to respiration in
humans.
7. define all words on vocabulary list .
8. order and explain the mechanics (the how) of pulmonary ventilation – quiet and forced.
9. list the muscles of breathing and assign them as being primary muscles of inspiration, primary
muscles of expiration, or accessory muscles.
10. explain ventilation/perfusion coupling.
11. describe the equation of air flow rate as it relates to pressure and resistance.
12. describe the role of surfactant and elasticity on compliance and ventilation in humans.

16. describe how breathing is regulated/controlled in the body (what are the main factors that determine your depth and rate of breathing?)
17. Summarize the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation graph and the effects of pH, temperature, partial
pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and amount of BPG on it.
