Biofuels

Different categories of biofuels

  • Bioalcohols

Renewable fuels produced through the fermentation of biomass which offers an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels

    • Ex. ethanol

  • Cellulosic Biomass Biofuel (lab)

Derived from non-food plant materials: agricultural residue or dedicated energy crops. Sustainable energy source with reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Biodiesels

Renewable diesel fuels typically produced from vegetable oils or animal fats through the process known as transesterification. They serve as cleaner-burning alternatives to petroleum diesel.

    • Algae-Based/Microbial Biodiesels

Renewable fuels derived from photosynthetic microorganisms (algae or bacteria). They offer potential for high yields and reduced land use compared to traditional biofuel feedstock.

  • Biogas

Renewable. Produced through anaerobic digestion of organic matter (agricultural waste or sewage). Made primarily of methane or carbon dioxide. Used for electricity generation, heating, and vehicle fuel.
