APTerm - Describing the Body

Anatomic Reference Systems
  • Body planes, directions, cavities, and regions are used to describe the locations and functions of body parts.
  • Anatomical Position: The standard position for anatomical reference.
    • Standing upright
    • Facing forward
    • Arms at side with palms forward
    • Feet slightly apart
Body Planes
  • A plane separates the body into sections, providing a way to visualize internal structures.
    • Frontal (Coronal) Plane: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.
    • Anterior = front, Posterior = back (also referred to as ventral and dorsal).
    • Sagittal (Lateral) Plane: Divides the body into left and right sides.
    • Midsagittal (Midline) separates them equally.
    • Transverse (Axial) Plane: Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.
    • Superior = above, Inferior = below.
Body Cavities
  • Definition: A body cavity is a space within the body that contains and protects internal organs.
  • Major body cavities:
    • Dorsal Cavity: Located in the back, includes:
    • Cranial Cavity: Contains the brain.
    • Spinal Cavity: Contains the spinal cord.
    • Ventral Cavity: Located in the front, divided into:
    • Thoracic Cavity: Contains lungs and heart, further divided into:
      • Mediastinum
      • Pleural cavity
    • Abdominal Cavity: Contains digestive organs and is located below the diaphragm.
    • Pelvic Cavity: Contains bladder and reproductive organs, lined by peritoneum.
Abdominal Divisions
  • The abdomen contains major organs, and its divisions help locate these organs:
    • Quadrants: Formed by midsagittal and transverse planes crossing at the umbilicus:
    • Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)
    • Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)
    • Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)
    • Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ)
    • Regions: Nine regions for anatomic location:
    • Right Hypochondriac
    • Epigastric
    • Left Hypochondriac
    • Right Lumbar
    • Umbilical
    • Left Lumbar
    • Right Inguinal
    • Hypogastric
    • Left Inguinal
Key Body Cavities
  1. Cranial Cavity: Contains the brain.
  2. Spinal Cavity: Contains the spinal cord.
  3. Thoracic Cavity: Contains lungs, heart, and associated structures.
  4. Abdominal Cavity: Contains stomach, liver, intestines, etc.
  5. Pelvic Cavity: Contains bladder and reproductive organs.
Back Divisions
  • Cervical: Neck region.
  • Thoracic: Upper back.
  • Lumbar: Lower back.
  • Sacral: Base of the spine.
Body Positions & Directions
  • Superior: Above.
  • Inferior: Below.
  • Anterior: Front.
  • Posterior: Back.
  • Medial: Toward the midline.
  • Lateral: Away from the midline.
Planes of the Body
  • Sagittal: Divides the body into left and right.
  • Frontal (Coronal): Divides the body into front and back.
  • Transverse: Divides the body into top and bottom.
Word Elements (Medical Terminology)
  • Prefix: Beginning of a word (e.g., "hyper-" meaning "excess").
  • Root: Core meaning of a word (e.g., "cardi-" meaning "heart").
  • Suffix: Ending of a word (e.g., "-itis" meaning "inflammation").
