Subatomics Review:
The Atom:
“Building Blocks” of matter
The smallest unit of matter that defines a particular element
Nutural atoms have the same amouth of protons and electrons
mass of the atom is in the nucleus
The Elcectron:
Locted outside of the Nuclus (electron cloud)
Negitive charge (-1)
small compared to protons and nutrons (m&m next to a basketball)
involved in bonding
Electron Cloud:
an area NOT a substance
surrounds the nucleus
electrons located here, mostly close to the nucleus
The Nucleus:
Core of the atom
contains almost all the mass of the atom
Proton:
in nucleus
positive charge (+1)
the number of protons defines the element (atomic number)
Neutron:
in nucleus
no charge (neutral)
Mass of 1 AMU (Atomic Mass Unit)
Add to mass of atom
Atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of nutrons are isotopes
