Subatomics Review:

  • The Atom:

    • “Building Blocks” of matter

    • The smallest unit of matter that defines a particular element

    • Nutural atoms have the same amouth of protons and electrons

    • mass of the atom is in the nucleus

  • The Elcectron:

    • Locted outside of the Nuclus (electron cloud)

    • Negitive charge (-1)

    • small compared to protons and nutrons (m&m next to a basketball)

    • involved in bonding

  • Electron Cloud:

    • an area NOT a substance

    • surrounds the nucleus

    • electrons located here, mostly close to the nucleus

  • The Nucleus:

    • Core of the atom

    • contains almost all the mass of the atom

      • Proton:

        • in nucleus

        • positive charge (+1)

        • the number of protons defines the element (atomic number)

      • Neutron:

        • in nucleus

        • no charge (neutral)

        • Mass of 1 AMU (Atomic Mass Unit)

        • Add to mass of atom

Atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of nutrons are isotopes
