Matter

Matter

  • has different properties including its particulate nature, physical and chemical properties, and extensive and intensive properties.

  • anything that occupies space and has mass.

Particular Nature of Matter

  • all matter is made up of atoms, which move in an empty space called void.

States of Matter

  • Solids

  • have definite shape and volume

  • tightly packed together

  • almost incompressible

  • particles vibrate in a fixed position

  • high densities and can expand only slightly when heated.

  • Liquids

  • no definite shape but have definite volume

  • particles are in contact with each other

  • have enough energy to keep changing positions relative to one another

  • forces between particles are strong enough to keep them close together but not strong enough to prevent them from moving apart from each other

  • generally have medium densities

  • Gas

  • takes shape, no definite volume

  • can expand to fill any volume

  • particles have enough energy to move freely

  • particles collide randomly
