FAMILY STRUCTURES & LEGACIES

OBJECTIVES

  1. Assess one’s family structure and the type of care he/she provides and accepts, which may contribute to understanding himself well.
  2. Formulate a plan on how to make a firmer and gentler relationship among family members.
  3. Make a genogram in order to trace certain physical features, personality traits, or behavioral attributes over generations.

==FAMILY==

  • Basis unit of society
  • Parents provide the values.
  • A child’s behavior is indicative of how well the family functions
  • A group with which a person made contact and the first source of socialization.
  • The organization of the family has a great effect.
  • Basic institution of security which protects its member from the demands of living
  • For instance, they support the unemployed family member or the physically handicapped and to take care of the aged member
  • The more the family provides a harmonious environment and support

explained that personality is greatly affected by one’s past experiences. Thus, the family plays a very important role in the dev. of a person.

  • is very important in the dev. of the infant, especially during the first 6 months of his/her life. (primary caretaker and child)
  • The primary attachment is usually developed to the mother but can also be to the father and other caregivers.

==PARENTING STYLES==

  1. Authoritative

    This happens when both parents have firm limits on their children’s behavior with love, affection, and warmth. They are willing to listen and may consider their children’s viewpoint

  2. Permissive

    It demonstrates through giving very few rules and demands to their children.

  • PERMISSIVE INDULGENT - Parents are those that are too involved with their children.
  • PERMISSIVE NEGLECTIVE - Parents ignore their children and allow them to do whatever they want

==FAMILY STRUCTURE==

  1. Nuclear Family - father, mother & children
  2. Single-Parent Family - widowed, divorced, or who has never married
  3. Extended Family - 2 or more nuclear families economically and socially related.
