During this time, people spent approximately 3 to 5 hours a day engaged in hunting and gathering, relying on stone flaking techniques to manufacture tools. The emergence of atlatl, a spear-throwing tool, demonstrated technological advancements. Social structures relied on the group size capable of defending itself while ensuring sufficient members for hunting and gathering. Groups were highly mobile, following herds and seasonal plants, though some communities became sedentary, establishing fishing villages that relied on the sea and created solid structures for habitation. Gender roles were distinct: women primarily focused on gathering, cooking, and child care, while men engaged in hunting and building shelter.

The Neolithic Age (beginning around 8,000 BC) marked the advent of agriculture, often referred to as the agricultural or Neolithic revolution. This shift initiated a significant population increase due to increased food availability. It involved domestication of various crops and animals, first emerging in the Middle East, specifically in the Fertile Crescent. Shifting or swidden agriculture practices were adopted, wherein fields were allowed to lie fallow to restore fertility. While agriculture brought numerous benefits, including food surpluses leading to the creation of cities and civilizations, advancements in art, architecture, and specialized labor, it also introduced negative effects. Diets became less varied, contributing to nutritional deficits, shorter stature, and earlier mortality. Dogs were the first animals domesticated, followed by sheep and goats for meat, milk, and skins, as well as cattle and donkeys for work, with llamas serving as the only beasts of burden utilized in the Americas.
