Lab Title: Constant Pressure Calorimetry

Learning Outcomes
Determine the enthalpy change (ΔH) under constant pressure.
Objectives
Calculate the specific heat capacity (Cs) of Magnesium metal through heat exchange measurement with surrounding water.
Calculate the enthalpy of solution (ΔHsoln) for ammonium sulfate using the measurement of salt dissolution in water.
Materials & Equipment
10~20g Magnesium (Mg) solid
Coffee cup calorimeter (with cup and lid)
Buret stand
Temperature Probe
Electronic stirrer
Magnetic stirring bar and trapper
Laptop with logger lite software
~20g Ammonium sulfate
Top loading balance with weighing paper and metal spatula
Chemical resistant gloves
Chemical waste beaker/tank
Lab Safety
It is the student's responsibility to adhere to laboratory safety policies and rules, not the instructor's or TA's.
Perform wet labs in pairs (preferred) or groups of three (if unavoidable).
Raw data sheets must be completed individually, although discussion within lab teams is encouraged.
Laboratory practices ensure safety for all participants.
Chemical splash goggles with eye shields are mandatory and must be worn at all times.
Proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals as outlined in the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) is required.
Record experimental measurements in permanent ink on individual raw data sheets.
If an error occurs, cross out the original data with a single line and write the new value next to it.
Data analysis calculations must follow significant figure rules.
Example: Mass of 1.00 mL of water = 1.68 g
