Learning Outcomes

  • Determine the enthalpy change (ΔH) under constant pressure.

Objectives

  • Calculate the specific heat capacity (Cs) of Magnesium metal through heat exchange measurement with surrounding water.

  • Calculate the enthalpy of solution (ΔHsoln) for ammonium sulfate using the measurement of salt dissolution in water.

Materials & Equipment

  • 10~20g Magnesium (Mg) solid

  • Coffee cup calorimeter (with cup and lid)

  • Buret stand

  • Temperature Probe

  • Electronic stirrer

  • Magnetic stirring bar and trapper

  • Laptop with logger lite software

  • ~20g Ammonium sulfate

  • Top loading balance with weighing paper and metal spatula

  • Chemical resistant gloves

  • Chemical waste beaker/tank

Lab Safety

  • It is the student's responsibility to adhere to laboratory safety policies and rules, not the instructor's or TA's.

  • Perform wet labs in pairs (preferred) or groups of three (if unavoidable).

  • Raw data sheets must be completed individually, although discussion within lab teams is encouraged.

  • Laboratory practices ensure safety for all participants.

  • Chemical splash goggles with eye shields are mandatory and must be worn at all times.

  • Proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals as outlined in the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) is required.

  • Record experimental measurements in permanent ink on individual raw data sheets.

  • If an error occurs, cross out the original data with a single line and write the new value next to it.

  • Data analysis calculations must follow significant figure rules.

    • Example: Mass of 1.00 mL of water = 1.68 g
