Cardiovascular System
Heart - pumps blood containing oxygen, nutrients, waste and hormones around the body
Red blood cells - carry oxygen from lungs to tissue
White blood cells - protect against disease
Platelets - help the blood to clot
Plasma - liquid part of the blood that carries cells and proteins throughout the body
Right atrium - receives blood low in oxygen from the body and then empties the blood into the right ventricle
Right ventricle - pumps blood low in oxygen to the lungs
Left atrium - receives blood full of oxygen from the lungs and then empties the blood into the left ventricle
Left ventricle - pumps blood full of oxygen out to the body
Aorta - the main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body
Vena cava - a large vein that carries blood to the heart from other areas of the body
Pulmonary valve - controls the flow of blood low in oxygen from the heart to the lungs
Pulmonary artery - carries blood low in oxygen from the right side of your heart to your lungs.
Systemic circulation - the circulation of blood in which oxygenated blood is pumped from the heart to the body and deoxygenated blood is returned back to the heart
Pulmonary circulation - the circulation of blood between the heart and the lungs
Arteries - carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
Veins - carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
Capillaries - transports blood, nutrients and oxygen to cells in the body
Double circulatory system - blood passes through the heart twice per circuit
