chapter 17

Vocab

  • Evolution - life changing over time

  • Fossils - preserved remains or traces of ancient organisms

  • Artificial selection - selective breeding

  • Adaption - any heritable characteristic that increases an organism's ability to survive and reproduce in it environment

  • Fitness - how well an organism can survive and reproduce in its environment

  • natural selection - The process by which organisms in nature with variations most suited to their local environment survive and leave more offspring

  • Biogeography  - is the study of where organisms live now and where they and their ancestors lived in the past

  • Homologous structures - inherited from a common ancestor but has a different function (fin to a foot)

  • Vestigial structures - evolved to have things from their ancestors that they have no use for (fin to a fin with no use)

  • Analogous structures - doesn’t come from a common ancestor but are in the same category - ish (bird wing and butterfly wing)

CFA

  • Charles Darwin - father of evolution

  • Charles Darwin discovered - different yet ecologically similar, species inhabited separated, but ecologically similar, habitats around the globe

  • hutton and Lyell discovered - earth is ancient and still changing

  • Thomas Mathus reasoned -if the human population grew unchecked. There wouldn’t be enough living space and food for everyone.

  • B.E.C.P.S

  • differneces between Homologous and analogous - Homologous come form a common ancestor but have a different function, like a fin to a human hand. Analogous don’t come from a common ancestor, have similar use but different function, like a bird wing and a butterfly wing.
