WK2 PRE-READING
Decolonising, expanding and diversifying knowledge
We are beginning with the complex issue of knowledge production.
Information forms the basis of what we know about the world.
Knowledge production has always excluded particular voices in history, and it is very important for Sociologists to consider.
‘Decolonising’ knowledge means expanding what gets to count as knowledge by looking at who had control over knowledge in the past. i.e who’s voices have dominated the conversation and how that dominance affects marginalised groups.
‘Epistemology’ is the world for the way knowledge is produced.
Knowledge should be produced by a wide variety of people to explore the different perspectives all have.
Universities and research institutions play a large role in expanding and diversifying knowledge.
A 40 minute video will play during the lecture. Ask yourself: What is decoloniality about?
Basically: this week will be exploring how information and knowledge have been created to exclude a wide range of perspectives. We will explore how society right now needs to expand and decolonise information.
