Rhythmic Contractions in GI Tract

  • The gastrointestinal (GI) tract does not contract fully at once; rather, it has small sections that contract rhythmically.

  • Mixing movements:

    • Not all portions of the GI tract contract collectively.

    • The mixing can occur in any direction, not just forward.

Chyme Formation

  • When food enters the small intestine, it is liquefied to form a substance known as chyme (spelled c-h-y-m-e).

  • Purpose of Chyme:

    • Chyme must mix with digestive enzymes present in the small intestine for proper digestion.

    • This mixing occurs through:

      • Segmentation: Small, circular contractions that serve to mix chyme thoroughly.

      • These movements help ensure that chyme is adequately exposed to digestive enzymes, facilitating the digestive process.
