Rhythmic Contractions in GI Tract
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract does not contract fully at once; rather, it has small sections that contract rhythmically.
Mixing movements:
Not all portions of the GI tract contract collectively.
The mixing can occur in any direction, not just forward.
Chyme Formation
When food enters the small intestine, it is liquefied to form a substance known as chyme (spelled c-h-y-m-e).
Purpose of Chyme:
Chyme must mix with digestive enzymes present in the small intestine for proper digestion.
This mixing occurs through:
Segmentation: Small, circular contractions that serve to mix chyme thoroughly.
These movements help ensure that chyme is adequately exposed to digestive enzymes, facilitating the digestive process.
