The solar system consists of the Sun and all the celestial bodies that are bound to it by gravity. The main components of the solar system include:
The Sun
A star at the center of the solar system.
Provides light and heat necessary for life on Earth.
Composed mostly of hydrogen (about 74%) and helium (about 24%).
Planets
There are eight recognized planets in the solar system, divided into two categories:
Terrestrial Planets
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Gas Giants
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Planets orbit the Sun in elliptical paths and can be classified based on their surface characteristics and atmospheric composition.
Dwarf Planets
Smaller than the main planets and do not clear their orbital path.
Examples include Pluto, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake.
Moons
Natural satellites that orbit planets.
Earth has one moon, while other planets like Jupiter and Saturn have many.
Asteroids and Meteoroids
Small rocky bodies that mostly reside in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Meteoroids are smaller fragments that can enter the Earth's atmosphere and become meteors or meteorites if they reach the ground.
Comets
Icy bodies that release gas or dust and form a tail when close to the Sun.
Comets originate from the outer regions of the solar system, such as the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud.
The Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud
Regions beyond Neptune filled with icy bodies and dwarf planets.
Oort Cloud is a theoretical cloud of icy objects believed to surround the solar system at a distance much farther than the Kuiper Belt.
Gravity and Orbits
The force of gravity keeps the planets, moons, asteroids, and comets in orbit around the Sun.
Each object in the solar system has a specific orbit which varies based on its distance from the Sun and its mass.
