Speed Ball
Speedball Basics
Objective of Speedball: The main goal is to outscore the opponent by scoring goals either into a soccer goal or by throwing the ball into an end zone.
Game Mechanics:
The gameplay resembles two sports:
Soccer: When the ball is on the ground, it is played by dribbling and passing.
Basketball and Football: When the ball is airborne, it is similar to basketball in passing and football in scoring.
Game Play
Starting the Game:
The game begins with a goal kick by one of the teams.
A goal kick is also used to restart the game after each point scored.
Passing the Ball:
Teams may pass the ball either by hand or by foot to move it up the court.
Passes can be made in any direction.
Player Movement:
A player in possession of the ball is allowed to take three steps with the ball before they must pass it, perform an air dribble, or drop it turning it into a ground ball.
Interaction with the Ball:
Players can convert a ground ball into an air ball at any time. They do this by kicking the ball up to themselves or another player, and it must be caught in the air (not off the bounce).
A player can hold the ball for a maximum of 3 seconds.
An air ball can be converted back to a ground ball by simply dropping it to the ground.
Out of Bounds:
If the ball goes out of bounds, a throw-in is executed.
Restarting Play After Scoring:
Following a score, play restarts with a kick-off at the center of the field.
Possession Rules:
The ball cannot be knocked out of another player's hands; however, it may be intercepted or knocked out of the air during a pass.
Illegal use of hands results in a turnover, transferring possession to the opposing team.
Scoring
Types of Scoring:
Touch Down: Worth 1 point.
Requirements: A player throws the ball into the end zone to a teammate who successfully catches it.
Goals: Worth 2 points.
Requirements: A player holds the ball just above the knees, flexes at the waist, drops the ball to the ground, and kicks it into the goal after it bounces once.
Drop Kick: Worth 3 points.
Requirements: The ball is dropped and kicked into the goal.
The Goalie
Movement and Positioning:
The goalie is allowed to move anywhere within their half of the court.
Passing Restrictions:
A goalie may NOT throw the ball to a teammate over the half-court line; doing so results in a turnover.
Ball Handling:
The goalie may use any part of their body to prevent the ball from entering the goal.
Once a goalie gains possession of the ball, the opponents must retreat and provide space for the goalie to return the ball to play.
The goalie must restart play within 3 seconds and is only allowed 3 steps with the ball before putting it back into play.
Vocabulary
Air Ball: A ball that has been propelled into the air by the feet and can be caught with the hands.
Ground Ball: A ball that cannot be handled with the hands and must be moved by dribbling or kicking, similar to soccer.
